Abigail Jones (11) celebrates the end of her cross country season with a trip to the State Finals. Known by most for her incredible athletic ability, Jones remains humble by giving most of her success to her teammates. When asked about her team she stressed, “They really helped me to get back up when I had been having a few tough races, the motivation that came from them throughout the season was incredible.” Noting her struggles throughout the season, Jones readily admitted that her journey throughout this season wasn’t a breeze.

Her journey to state began over the summer when her team would meet five days a week to practice. Jones comments, “We chose to meet five days a week to practice and we would meet every so often for afternoon runs. Our running schedule changed each day of theweek. Our days would rotate consistently between easy and hard days.” A hard day, as defined by Jones, was a short amount of miles but at a faster pace, whereas an easy day was 6-7, miles but at a much slower pace. The easy days, where she could run and talk with her teammates, were her favorites.

Another facet to her success as a runner comes from the friendly competition she has with her mother. As a Marian Central record holder, Mrs. Jones helps Abigail with her running and the two use it as a time to talk and bond. When asked about how her mother has influenced her running career Jones explained, “It’s really fun to have that competition with her! It pushes me to be a better runner because ,of course, I’m trying to break her record.” Through all her trials this year, Abigail was able to further her season like never before.
