This year in the Olympics, the USA ended with 121 medals, 46 of them gold. Over the past 6 olympics, the US has come out on top with the most gold medals and the highest total of medals overall. One of the most successful U.S. olympians is Michael Phelps.

This year is said to be Michael Phelps’ last year in the Olympics, he has said this before, and in the next games he could surprise us. In his whole Olympic career Phelps hasn’t gone to the opening ceremony, until this year. He was even chosen to carry the flag. Phelps is known as “the most decorated Olympian of all time.” He has won 28 medals total throughout his Olympic career. This year he won 5 gold medals and 1 silver. Another swimmer, Katie Ledecky, won 4 gold medals and 1 silver. She got the Olympic record and the world record in the women’s 800m freestyle. With these two leading the way, the swimming team performed better than ever before. All in all, the team, won 33 medals, 16 of them gold. Through their hard work, the swim team won the most medals of all the sports for USA.

Another team that did well was Gymnastics, they won 12 medals in total for the USA. The girls, once again, won the gold medal for the team event. Simone Biles outdid herself this year with 4 gold medals and 1 bronze. Aly Raisman, a returning Olympian, finished with 1 gold and 2 silver. During the closing ceremony, Simone was even given  the great honor of holding the flag.

The U.S. Track & Field also won a lot of medals; 32 as a team, 13 of them gold. They were the second sport to earn the most medals for the USA. Michelle Carter won the first ever gold for the US in the women’s shot put. This year’s Olympic games were  fun to watch for everyone, but especially for the USA. They got to watch as the athletes, who train hard all year round, got to show their country pride. The athletes from this country, and all countries, are proud to represent their country in this event because it takes them a lot of hard work and dedication to make it to the Olympics.
