Demons. Felfire. The shadow of apocalypse looms over the world once again, and this time, it will take more than a faction of warriors to drive back the tide of evil. Azeroth is in mortal danger and it needs the strength and might of the world’s greatest champions to bring it salvation. Azeroth needs you.

Blizzard Entertainment recently released the newest expansion to the World of Warcraft franchise: World of Warcraft: Legion. In this new expansion, the Burning Legion makes another appearance as a returning horde of demons under the leadership of the powerful warlock, Gul’dan, who is a mere puppet to the diabolical plans of the God-like entity known as Sargeras. Previously, Sargeras was contained in a magical tomb that kept the deity asleep for all of eternity, that is, until Gul’dan gets greedy with his demonic powers and seeks to awaken the one who gave them to him in the first place. With the endless armies of demons, Gul’dan takes his amplified powers and seeks the ruin of Azeroth, the home to many of the races found within the game: Humans, Elves, Tauren, etc.

As one of many champions within the game, you must travel to the new zone, called the Broken Isles, to combat the Burning Legion at their main assault front. As you first arrive to the Broken Isles, you realize you were unprepared as you come face to face with the full front of the Legion and people all around you start to perish. You must retreat to the sanctuary Dalaran, a large floating city moved above the Broken Isles by the most powerful mages in Azeroth, the Kirin Tor. There, you become the leading champion of your class, whether that be a Hunter, Paladin, or Death Knight, and begin your assault on purging the Broken Isles of the demon infestation.

As you plan your assault on the Broken Isles, you may choose to start wherever you want. The first of the four zones to choose from is Azuna. Azuna is comprised of Night Elf settlements, both new and ancient, that are under the villainous control of the demigod, Azshara, Queen of the Naga. You aid a new faction of Illidari Demon Hunters in stemming the the demonic invasion and help the cursed spirits of ancient elves finally achieve rest after ten thousand years of torment.

One of the next stops in your assault, you could choose a realm known as Val’Sharah, which is a zone modeled by the demigod, Cenarius, after the Emerald Dream. The once beautiful forest of Val’Sharah is now being taken over by the Legion, specifically a demon name Xavius, who once turned the Emerald Dream into the Emerald Nightmare for a time, corrupting all those who sought out refuge in the Dream. You aid the Archdruids of Val’Sharah in driving back the Nightmare Corruption from the forest, sacrificing great heros in the process. Sacrifice means everything in the next zone, Stormheim. In this area, the land is dominated by Vrykul settlements. The Vrykul are giants that resemble the Vikings of old in the real world, with style and culture included. To gain the power to drive back the Legion of demons, you must undergo three feats of strength to gain the blessing of the God, Odyn. Yes, Odyn. And with this power, you become one step closer to defeating Gul’dan and his minions.

The final assault on the Broken Isles could be in the zone of Highmountain. Highmountain is a realm that has been inhabited by an ancient tauren lineage that have lived there in tradition for thousands of years. Much like the modern tauren, they live a druidic lifestyle by using natural magic and remedies to preserve the earth and people who live on it. But not all is peaceful on Highmountain. An ancient conflict is still happening between the tauren and their ancient rival, the Drogbar. The Drogbar are intelligent creatures that live underground and tunnel beneath the earth. The conflict is between who has domain over the earth and the resources found within it, and neither side is willing to give up their homes to settle this war. As the hero, you are asked by the leader of the Highmountain Tauren to defeat the leader of the Drogbar, Dargrul The Underking. You are needed because the fate of Highmountain is at stake when Dargrul finds an ancient artifact that could destroy the mountain in a single blow if its full potential were to be released.

To effectively combat the demons in each of these zones, you must find a legendary artifact that is used by your specific class. Once you undergo the hunt and retrieval of your artifact, you periodically gain relics from around the Broken Isles, which can be magically turned into energy to empower your artifact weapon, which grants new passive and active abilities for your hero. Once you reach the highest possible level, you can complete quests and missions to further research your artifact to grant large boosts of power to your weapon, making you an unstoppable, demon-killing force to be reckoned with.

As a large supporter and player of the World of Warcraft franchise, I rate this expansion a five out of five. This is Blizzard Entertainment’s best expansion yet, and with the potential for raids and world bosses that are being released soon, I hope it will get even better. The diversity among players and the ever changing world that is Azeroth gives the game an aspect of surprise and excitement that the last expansion, Warlords of Draenor lacked a bit. The unpredictability of the new expansion makes the game more intense and a really suspenseful adventure.
