Time is up! The relaxing summer days are over, and school is now in session; however, there is something that feels different about starting back to school this year. Something feels off, and it’s not just the feeling of waking up before 10 in the morning, five days a week. It’s Marian Central’s new 2017-2018 school start date. No longer does school begin the last week of August; this year the first 8:05 a.m. class began on August 17th, 2017. Going back to school with a new start date quickly became the center of attention as August began. Coming back to school even earlier than usual adds to the anticipation of the 2017-2018 school year.

Of course, for some of the students, there is moaning and groaning about coming back to school, but for others, they can’t wait to be walking the halls with their closest friends again. When asked about the earlier start date, Issy Nick (11) stated, “Yeah, it stinks that summer was shorter, but now that we started earlier, it means we have exams before Christmas break, and school gets out in May.” One of the plus sides of the early start date includes the fact that first semester final exams will now be before Christmas break; as a result, there will no longer be stress about studying over Christmas break or immediately when school kicks back in January.

Not only did school begin a week in advance, but Marian’s athletic practices arrived even sooner. The volleyball program had their first tryout on Wednesday, August 9th. During an intense practice for the sophomore volleyball team at tryouts, Lindsey Bahl (10) said, “I can’t wait to go back to school! I am not really a fan of waking up so early every morning,  but I love the first week of school. I am always so thrilled to see all my friends again and some I haven’t seen all summer. It is such a fun and exciting week!” The earlier school begins, the sooner the anticipation for the first football game begins as well. The Friday night football games are truly a time where each grade has the chance to come together and support one another. Pure excitement is always in the air on the day of Marian’s first football game, setting the scene for the rest of the year, showing how Marian students come together to encourage one another. On Friday, August 25th, the turnout was incredible; not only did our varsity football team pull out a win, but the student section came together and truly made the new early start to school special.

Not only did the students have opinions about going back to school early, but the parents did as well. Marian Central parent Mrs. Rebecca Novakoski said, “ I wish that I had a few more weeks with my kids and that they could go back to school closer to Labor Day. However, I am so glad that exams will be before Christmas break. It will take some stress off my kids and even myself. I won’t have to worry about my children studying over Christmas break.” School may have started earlier than usual, but at the end that first full school day, all the students and teachers seemed ecstatic to see one another again setting the tone for a school year filled with anticipation.
