Marian Central is expecting big changes as the new school year approaches. One change, which seems to greatly excite the students, is the new late start schedule time. As of the new year, the late start schedule will be pushed back by 40 minutes. The 2016-2017 school year did have late starts about once a month, where class started at 9:05 am, but now class will begin at 9:45 am. The Late Start will be scheduled for the first Tuesday of every month. This new schedule is a trial for the staff to see if it helps with their students attention and awareness in morning.

This schedule will now create 31 minute long classes, with exceptions of lunch periods. Students will be able to keep their focus and concentration for the majority of class as they are now shortened. Having the lunch period lengths stay the same is important because it will still allow students to have the same break from classes as it would on a normal day. Although this will create a 49-minute difference in normal lunch period times which may affect students’ behavior. Forth lunch on a regular day begins at 10:41 am, but on late start days forth lunch will not begin until 11:30 am. Sophomore Ellie Fortin expressed, “…with The Late Start being pushed back, I will definitely increase my snacking habits in the morning as lunch is at a later time. This later lunchtime may alter students behavior as some may grow hungry which will thus make them angry/annoyed. This may be a setback for some students, but now students will have extra time to do homework and sleep.

Last year students who took AP/honors or even regular classes took advantage of the late start as they had more time to sleep and or more time to do homework. Senior Carol Kirwan said, “With the new late start time I will be able to catch up on my sleep as I’m always up late doing homework.” The late start is very beneficial to most students, as most normally have hours of homework. With the late start, students will be able to go to bed at the same time as normal but now be more prepared and alert throughout the next day. Some students choose not to catch up on sleep, and choose to go out to breakfast with friends before school! The extra time late start provides gives students many different options to better themselves.

Teachers, unfortunately, do not get the same late start, they have to be at school prior to 7:30 am. During the time from when teachers arrive until students arrive, some days they will be in all staff meeting. This is a great way for the staff administration to inform teachers on needed updates and information. This will also help teachers as they will now have extra time to grade, prepare lesson plans and have other teacher meetings. This new schedule will help students stay more alert and aware during class time. It will also improve the sleep time and stress load from homework off of students. This will better well-round all students as they will experience a change in their daily schedules.
