Roaring cheers of students fill Lander’s Pavilion as the Marian Central cheerleaders perform their routine. The girls’ dance team performs to increase the excitement and to show the Hurricane spirit. Once the girls are finished, an unexpected flip occurs with the senior boys rushing onto the court, getting into formation. All of the students in the gym are standing on the bleachers eagerly waiting for the routine to start. From the Seven Dwarfs to Lion King to even the summer hit song Despacito, the boys’ cheer squad has done it again, making a memorable routine for this year’s powderpuff game.

In years past, the junior and senior girls would play the powderpuff game, but the boys did not have any opportunities to participate in any other activities.  That has since changed, and this has been the second year where the boys have performed at the powderpuff game. It has now become a tradition for the junior and senior boys. Both Coach Brunken and Coach Tuzik, the girls’ cheer coaches, work extremely hard to come up with the choreography and to make sure the routine is fresh and crisp. “The practices and being able to choose what we wanted to add to the routine was my favorite part,” said Blake Peterson (12). The boys go all out from custom t-shirts to jorts and to finding a creative way to entertain the entire student body. This routine allows the boys to be included in another homecoming event besides the sports and clubs that celebrate the week.

Cheerleading is a fun way to hype up the crowd, but it can also be difficult as well. Josh Tinkham (11) explained what was the hardest part of the routine, “The hardest part for me was remembering all the song and the dance moves that went with each song, but my absolute favorite part was the Lion King portion of the dance.” The boys were all very excited about the fun and different ways to make the dance memorable for years to come. Dante Bucci (12) explained why he joined the cheer squad this year, “ As I watched the cheer squad last year, I saw how much fun the boys had, so I could not help but to get involved this year!”  Since this year’s homecoming was Disney-themed, the boys decided to add songs from some of the most iconic Disney movies ever made to the routine. The routine started with the boys lined up, marching in while singing Heigh-Ho from the movie Snow White. Then the cheer squad reenacted a fighting scene with foam swords from the movie Mulan. The lifting of Simba in the beginning of the Lion King will never be the same due to Dante Bucci and Aidan McCray portraying Simba. The entire gym was then filled with roars of excitement.

Marian tried something new this year and had the spirit pep rally on Monday instead of Friday, so the boys started the week with a bang. Homecoming week is all about coming home and enjoying the exciting activities and experiencing the magic of the Hurricane spirit. The cheer routine really helped to increase the excitement for the week. On Thursday, the junior and senior girls faced off against each other in the annual powderpuff game. No matter who won the game, the boys still had fun and brought an enjoyable performance at the end.
