The hallways were decorated, and the themes were chosen; the next few days were full of celebration. After a week of fun costumes, the last day of homecoming week approaches. A student searches for a unique outfit to show off their Marian spirit. In the back of their closet, they find an extra large jersey that has their last name partly peeled off on the back. After years of dust and memories, the student can show the hard work their relative showed to earn this jersey. These generations of Marian alumni have passed their spirit wear on to the next Hurricane. Students can wear any red, white, and blue spirit wear of their choice to show Marian Central spirit. Each Marian student, whether they are a former Marian or current student, feels true pride in being a Hurricane.

Students arrive at school thirty minutes before the first bell on Friday to get in line to be judged for the intense spirit point competition. Students go all out during homecoming week every year, and Friday is the last day to receive points for the competition between the classes. Each student can earn points for their grade by getting judged on the outfit by the teachers. The goal is to earn the most spirit points by the end of the week, and the grade that wins gets a dress down day. Students can represent their extracurriculars by wearing their own organization’s spirit wear, and some students even wear Hurricane flags to show their school spirit.

This Hurricane pride is not just for extracurriculars but for grade levels as well. Marian is truly a family, and everyone supports each other to succeed. Being involved in athletics and activities is a huge part of receiving the full high school experience. Throughout the week many fall sports have homecoming games. Alumni can come to watch the sport they may have partaken in years ago and are acknowledged for their participation. For example, during the volleyball game, alumni were given special recognition and corsages. The Friday night homecoming football game, this year against Viator, is a popular reunion for most Hurricanes and a great chance to sing the beloved fight song once again. Daniel Dusik (11), a starting offensive lineman, explained his take on the Hurricane fight song, “I know the fight song very well since the football team and I sing it after each victory.” Marian students and alumni will forever remember all the good times they had in high school.

Hurricanes return home to celebrate in Marian homecoming festivities every year. Marian alumni come back to look back on their four years of memories and are still involved in the school. Some alumni become teachers, counselors, coaches, and volunteers. Many alumni come home and teach at Marian. One of these teachers, Miss Gallagher, had some memories she recalled as a sophomore student at Marian. “I remember my sophomore year, and the theme was movies, so my friends and I dressed up as the lollipop guild from the Wizard of Oz.” The memories and friendships from high school stay with us forever. Passing down that history to the next Hurricane is what makes Marian different from other schools.

A week of celebration comes to a close with red and blue hats, jerseys, skirts, shirts, and even a student’s choice of a spirited pair of Crocs.  The celebration comes to a close with Marian spirit day. The students have worn their favorite Marian clothes and have supported their clubs and teams. The fabric might fade away, but the Hurricane spirit is visible to students and Marian alumni alike. The memories of every Hurricane will last a lifetime.
