Everyone can always use a little help and advice from time to time. Students sometimes can become overwhelmed and stressed from the amount of homework, sports practices, and club meetings they have to balance everyday. This is where Marian’s amazing Mentor Program comes in! Becoming a guide for the underclassmen takes a lot of work, so training sessions are necessary to prepare mentors for their important jobs.

Training begins in the summer for the new and returning mentors. There are separate meetings for sophomore and freshmen mentors, but the basis is the same: teaching how to connect and help your mentee, and make their year the best possible. The day opens with mass led by Father Doyle.A bingo game follows, and the squares contain items that the mentors brought in for donation for the Woodstock Food Pantry. After that, they’re given a thorough presentation of what is expected of them, what qualities a mentor should project, and how to help out the underclassmen in all aspects. Mentor presidents Makayla Villont (12) and Luke Dowell (12) also spoke on what their goals are for the year and how they plan for the mentors to accomplish them.

When asked why she originally wanted to be a part of, and one day help lead the mentor program, Makayla says, “I always noticed how the mentors acted. Not only were they leaders, but they were kindhearted and cared about you as a person, as well as a student. It really inspired me, and I knew since freshman year that I wanted to be apart of it.”

After multiple training sessions and presentations, the mentors are ready to meet their mentees when school starts. It is a long and involved process, so make sure to appreciate your mentor for their help and dedication!
