Scholastic BowlEight rounds. Nine schools. One hundred and sixty tossups. On Saturday, October 17, 2015, Scholastic Bowl attended its first meet of the school year. The team consisted of Maranda Donaldson (10), Gabby Castro (10), Sheila Sagear (12), Claire Van Der Bosch (11), Julia Tompkins (12), Anna Podborny (9), James Lydon (10), Jay Wieczorek (11), Dante Bucci (10), Joseph Noonan (9), Dean Limosnero (9), and Max Striedl (9). After arriving at Marian at seven in the morning, they were tired, but an hour’s ride in a cold bus certainly woke them up. Finally, they arrived on the enemy ground, Auburn High School. The schools that competed were Auburn A and B; Waubonsie Valley; Boylan Catholic; Newman Central Catholic; Keith CD/Belvidere Hybrid; Belvidere; and, of course, Marian A and B. Dr. Pinnau, the fearless coach of the Marian Central members, split the team into boys and girls, and both went to face their first opponents, girls v. Belvidere, boys v. Auburn B. After weeks of training with practice question packets, it came down to this. Five buzzers, each with a thumb poised over the red button. Ready to jam it down at a moment’s notice. Hopes were high, but unfortunately, things did not necessarily go as planned. Most of the other teams had mastered the split-second impulse of “hit the button!” and Marian faced some fierce competition. However, the team had an amazing time, and looked forward to their next meet, which was on November 21, 2015, at Belvidere North.
