Dance is a major sport that is overlooked by many. Commonly thought of as just the halftime entertainment until the “real sport” comes back on. However, what the crowd does not know is the all the preparation that goes into each routine. Dancers start classes at just two years old training to developing skills of flexibility, strength, and stamina. Establishing these skills from a young age allow dancers to effortlessly lift their leg above their heads and complete turns, such as pirouettes and fouettés, without falling flat on their faces. Dancers believe all this hard work and training was worth it because they love performing.  Each dance number is choreographed by the dance team members themselves. Not only does the high school dance teams dance in front of their school communities, but they compete between generally ten or more teams.

Competition season is a busy time for the dance teams. Especially, yours truly, the Marian Central Dance Team. This year the girls competed in 4 competitions. Each competition had from ten to thirty teams in each category. Our dancers placed top 10 for a majority of the competitions. Every year they are constantly improving. 8CountAudio tweeted, “Can totally tell that Marian Central have spent the week sharpening that pom routine. Doin work!” Their Coach, Chris Oppasser, said, “I am very proud of the girls. They worked so hard all year improving their dance skills and focusing on performing not only for their school but for themselves.”
