The 89th annual Academy Awards was certainly a night to remember. It was full of superstars, controversies, and surprising results. The ceremony began with a performance of “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, a song written for the movie Trolls. Then the host, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, took the stage and had the entire audience laughing. He also contributed to the nation’s political conversation, saying, “The country is divided right now. If everyone of you took a minute to reach out to one person you disagree with and have a positive conversation … as Americans … we could make America great again.”

One of the biggest embarrassments of the night was when the incorrect film was announced as Best Picture on stage. Actors Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were presenting the award and announced La La Land as the winner, when in reality the film Moonlight was chosen for Best Picture. The moment came out very awkward and uncomfortable in front of an audience of millions.

Though many of the winners were to be expected, some did surprise the audience. Emma Stone won best leading actress for her performance in La La Land. Casey Affleck took the male award for best actor in a leading role for Manchester by the Sea. Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his film Moonlight. Viola Davis took home the prize for best supporting actress for her movie Fences, and ,as expected, the  beloved movie Zootopia won Best Animated Film.

Overall the 89th annual Academy Awards was a successful and joyful night, as widely adored  actors and films were awarded for their brilliance.
