Friends On and Off the Court

For Senior Grace Shukis, basketball has been an important part of her life since she was a kid. Growing up with an older sister and two younger brothers kept her active, never bored, and started her interests in athletics. Grace Shukis attended St. Joseph’s Catholic school where she played on her school team from sixth to eighth grade. It was in eighth grade when she decided to play travel basketball. Joining that team was one of her best decisions as Grace says, “The girls I met on MACS are still my closest friends to this day.” Knowing a few girls before starting as a freshman in a new school was a great feeling for Grace. Basketball became a routine in Grace’s life that led to new friends and a love for the sport.

The next four years were filed with team bonding- and lots and lots of practicing! Belonging to a team was like having a second family. The girls Grace met from that first MACS practice were there for her until the end of high school. She is still contemplating playing in college, as she has a couple offers to play basketball. Grace says, “If I hadn’t pushed myself, I would not have been given the chance to play in college, so I’m thankful that I stayed motivated.” Like many seniors, Grace is getting ready to take a big step in her life, but will definitely miss playing the sport she loves with some of her best friends.
