Lanie Sebion (12) has had a love of golf since a young age and first began playing on her neighborhood’s golf team. But as the years passed, she drifted away from golf to focus on her studies and other sports. Fortunately, at the beginning of her sophomore year she re sparked her interest, and joined the Marian girls’ golf team her junior year. Her first year on the team, Sebion began to perfect her skills and played golf every single day that summer. Sebion reminisced on the early days saying, “My junior was my first time ever really playing golf competitively and I thought it would be an easy sport to pick up, but it’s actually really hard. That’s what prompted me to keep playing; the challenges it brought.”

With the combination of hard work and practice, Sebion’s skills increased, and senior year she was number two on the lineup. “She worked hard over the summer, played all the time, and became on of the best golfers,” said Mrs. Carver about Lanie’s change in skill level from junior to senior year. The Varsity Girls Golf team won the majority of their games and went on to compete at regionals and sectionals in 2016, taking first place at both. At the state finals, Sebion managed to have the best score among the Marian team, and individually taking 31st place while the team overall taking sixth place.  At the end of the season, Sebion took the Most Improved award for the season.

Sebion plans on continuing her golf career after high school by participating in club sport and recreationally at the University of Alabama where she will be attending this fall. Sebion focused on the future saying,  “Golf is a sport I can play the rest of my life so even though I won’t ever be a professional, it’s something I can continue to do. I just enjoy having these memories and it’ll motivate me to continue to play and what I enjoy about the sport.”
