The school office was in danger. It was empty, like it was missing a fearless leader to take Marian central to a continuous progression. Father Doyle left and there was no superintendent again. Months of confusion and cluster came and passed and a hero was delivered. During the end of the 2017 school year, Marian made the best decision they ever made – hiring the new head of the chain of command, Mr. Baldwin.

While school started up in the fall once again, Students anticipated new changes to the school like later late starts, starting school earlier, and taking exams before Christmas break, which is a blessing in itself. However, seeing a new “leader” was something that came as a surprise. The school finally felt alive once more as if Baldwin was always there. Within the first few weeks of his career at Marian, Baldwin made it evident that he was a part of the Marian family. From every home football game to girls Powderpuff Baldwin makes sure he is there to support his upcoming family. At the start of the year, he made sure to make his way through all Theology classes to introduce himself to the student community. In minutes he had classes cracking up with his stories and favorite memories throughout his life such as his love for hockey, his family, and previous work experience. Of course, every new superintendent has goals they wish to accomplish – “By the end of this year, I hope to at least have a working nacho and a new sno-cone machine as I know many of the students have asked for” Baldwin said, chuckling. “I love the students’ ideas that were presented to me during class. I think the most important thing to do for the student body is to support and listen to them.” Marian students are lucky to be able to have someone who will not only listen but reflect on their voice as a Hurricane.

Of course, every school is not perfect and needs some work around the edges and superintendent Baldwin is prepared for the challenge. While some things may not happen right away, Baldwin has some hopes for the future regarding the well being of Marian. “If I could change some things right away about this school it would definitely be to have air conditioning for the summer, and to have a true front entrance,” he said smiling. However, Baldwin is excited to be at Marian since it is different than other schools he’s previously been at. “The Traditions here are so thrilling, along with the opportunities.” Marian’s mentor program is something that is grounded in Hurricane tradition. It is so calming to know that walking through the Marian doors freshman year, there is a friend within the mentor program. Another thing that students do not take lightly is the Friday night student section. From chants to baby powder to the hurricane warning flag, our voice will be heard. “Spirituality is another thing I love here, it is so evident in the students and the community.” The best part about going to a Catholic school is all-school masses and retreats. At all school mass, the school comes together as one as we tune in to Father’s homily. “And lastly, I love the element of preparedness for college that this school provides its students, I am so proud to be apart of something like this to this scale.”  Seeing a friendly, smiling face in the hallway felt so welcoming and stress-free. Not only did that begin on the first day of school, but it was consistent with the year and the rest of the year to come.

Marian Central was missing the consistency of a leader, and that was found in Mr. Baldwin. Like a superhero that saves his city’s civilians, Baldwin saved us – he saved us in his kindness, perseverance, and loyalty. Continuing towards the future, the Marian family is excited to see the new changes that he will bring to help the school progress. Being new isn’t easy, but Baldwin fit right into the community.
