Improving Life One Year at a Time

The ancient Babylonians started the ritual of resolution making. They would promise their gods that, if they would complete goals for the year, they would be gifted in the coming year. People saw the coming year as a fresh start to end bad habits and begin new ones. Making resolutions is a great way to set the tone for the new year, and to achieve these goals, one should make clear, specific and short-term goals to have the most effectiveness. Common resolutions can include working out, eating healthier, traveling, volunteering, and getting better grades in school. Making resolutions is the best way to begin a new year because one can accomplish their dreams and ambitions by trying new things.

Everyone wants to feel good and look great. The start of a new year is a great time to accomplish health and fitness goals. Many people get gym memberships and go on different types of diets. Keeping to these goals can be challenging for some but the ending result will make one feel fulfilled. One should make realistic expectations with short-term goals and try to not push their body too far. These health goals make people feel confident and help them find more inspiration to adventure out into the world.

From flying across the world to road trips with friends, many people see the new year as a chance to experience new things and see new places. Traveling is a great way to relax and enjoy life, a common theme to many resolutions. Tia Frydrychowicz (11) says, “I love to set new travel goals in the beginning of the year to experience some of my favorite things from snowboarding in Colorado to laying out on Florida beaches.” Although many people see the start of a new year as a time to travel, some like to help their communities through volunteer projects. Volunteering is a great way to be involved in one’s community, and it helps those in need. People can do this by running 5ks, working soup kitchens, and donating clothes. Many people forget about the less fortunate after the holidays; so this resolution is key to many communities. Many students are involved in volunteer work to help apply for colleges and lend a helping hand.

School can be a stressful place for students involved in numerous extracurriculars, hours of homework, and college prep and, at times, very exhausting; but when a new semester begins with a fresh start, it becomes a more calming environment. Many people receive more motivation than ever before at the start of a new year. Signing up for study groups, talking to teachers, improving note-taking skills, and getting organized can improve one’s grades. Avery Carlson (11) says, “I plan to make more time to study to improve my GPA.” These goals can help improve a student’s ability to get into the college of their dreams or achieve the diploma they have been waiting for.  Resolutions can help a person make the best life for themselves.

The start of a new year is a time for new beginnings, healthy habits, and fun adventures. It is a time people not only try to better themselves, but they also try to better those around them. Setting goals opens up new possibilities, and this may include running a 5k, swimming with tropical creatures, starting a non-profit organization, or being kind to a neighbor. Everyone has their dreams and aspirations in life, and what better way to start than at the beginning of a fresh, new year.
