With only a few days left in the quarter, students are starting to study and prepare for exams. Students have endless hours of study and teachers have hours of tests to prepare. For freshmen and new students, this is their first round of exams. On the other hand, seniors are taking their last quarter one exams at Marian. Students who have missing or absent work are doing last minute assignments in order to get those assignments in for points to boost their grade.

Exams can cost lots of time studying. Some Freshmen didn’t expect exam studying to be so time-consuming, and a majority of students have after-school activities and jobs that require their time well into the evening. After their activities, students must decide whether to go home and study or to get a good night sleep. Quarter exams often entitle students little to no sleep and can cause lots of stress. “When quarter exams come around, I study for hours on end and sleep for maybe five hours at night,” says Danielle Vance (10). “In the end, it really pays off because you get a good score.”

Students who participate in afterschool activities have to balance studying with their activities. “I will plan to have certain days where I study, and the other days are when I have my after-school activities,” Philip Szpicki (10) continues, “I advise starting to study a week or so before the exam, and space it out with intervals per day.” Students should take studying seriously, in order to do well on exams. Doing too many subjects or cramming studying into the night before not only adds tons of stress, but it gives a greater chance to not do well on the exam because you didn’t have dedicated time to study over a period of days.

Teachers also have to prepare for quarter exams. Teachers need to not only be sure students know all the material but prepare study guides and the test. “For my students, I provided study guides, which we went over in class. I also explained to my students what was on the test so they know what to expect,” Ms. Amanda Link, one of the new Marian science teachers, explained. Students who complete the study guides have a better chance of doing well on their quarter exams. Link also advised that “Highlighters are your friend, and get a good night’s sleep before the test and make sure to eat breakfast.” It is recommended that the test taker get 9-12 hours of sleep and eating breakfast the morning of a test can improve your chances of receiving a better score.

Preparing for quarter exams is a big part for both students and teachers. Teachers need to make sure they have the test made, and provide students with the proper material and possibly even a study guide to enhance their test taking. Students also need to study subjects that they feel they need improvement on.  Studying for exams can be time-consuming and rough, but in the end, it may pay off.
